Overview
USDe is the token issued by Ethena Labs, classified as a synthetic/algorithmic stablecoin (the category is explained in "Classification of Stablecoins"). Unlike 2022-era UST, USDe does not rely on minting a sister token to defend its peg — instead it uses the delta-neutral hedge described below. The issuing company's profile is covered in "Ethena Labs."
Mechanism and backing
USDe's collateral consists of staked liquid tokens (stETH and similar assets) and stablecoins; an equal and opposite short position in perpetual futures is opened on partner exchanges against that long position, so moves in the collateral's price are offset by the short. To reduce exchange counterparty risk, Ethena uses an Off-Exchange Settlement model: collateral is held by independent custodians — Copper, Ceffu, Cobo, and others — rather than on the derivatives exchange's own balance sheet. Yield for sUSDe (the staked version of USDe) holders comes from staking rewards on the underlying assets plus perpetual funding-rate payments; the yield floats and declined through 2026 as funding rates compressed. For sustained negative funding, the protocol maintains a reserve fund — per its March 2026 update, about $62 million against a modeled tail-risk coverage need of $5–7 million.
Market-cap trajectory
USDe's market cap grew from under $6 billion at the start of 2025 to a peak of about $15 billion in early October 2025. On October 10, 2025, a broad crypto market deleveraging shock hit (about $19 billion in liquidations market-wide, with disruptions at several exchanges including Binance), and the yield spread between USDe and staked ETH turned negative — removing the incentive to hold looped USDe positions on platforms such as Aave and Pendle. By mid-November 2025, USDe supply had fallen to roughly $8.5 billion, and by early September 2026 to about $4.3 billion. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York separately examined this episode in the context of systemic risk from synthetic stablecoins. The event itself was not a USDe depeg — it was a supply contraction as leveraged positions unwound, not a loss of the dollar peg.
Regulatory status
On March 21, 2025, Germany's BaFin found deficiencies in Ethena GmbH's MiCA compliance, ordered an immediate halt to further USDe issuance, and froze the reserve assets backing tokens issued by Ethena GmbH; separately, BaFin raised the concern that sUSDe might constitute an unregistered security under German law, since staking USDe for sUSDe promises return of principal plus yield. On April 3, 2025, Ethena GmbH withdrew its MiCA authorization application, and on April 14–15, 2025, BaFin ordered the company to wind down its unauthorized business and reverse USDe issuance, imposing a €600,000 fine and barring further sales in the EU; the March reserve-freeze order was later rescinded on June 25, 2025, but this did not reverse the wind-down requirement. The company effectively exited the regulated EU market for USDe in 2025 as a result.
